A useful dashboard does not display everything. It gives a specific decision maker enough trusted context to act, investigate or ask a better question.
Begin with decisions and owners
List recurring decisions, who makes them, how often and which actions follow. This prevents a collection of attractive charts that nobody is responsible for using.
Create reliable definitions
Agree what counts as a lead, active customer, order, revenue and source. Document transformations and freshness so teams can reconcile dashboard numbers with operational systems.
Design a decision rhythm
Use alerts for exceptions, weekly views for operating control and monthly views for trends. Review whether each metric changes action and retire signals that add noise without accountability.
Quick implementation checklist
- Name the decision and owner
- Standardise KPI definitions
- Show freshness and source
- Build a review routine
